Skincare Routine for Running in Unpredictable Weather

Mar 16, 2025

For many runners, the best moments happen when you’re out there, moving through the elements. A light drizzle can feel refreshing, while a sudden downpour can turn a run into an adventure. And if you run in Scotland like me, you can’t wait for perfect conditions—you run in whatever the sky throws at you.

March is unpredictable. One day, it’s crisp and bright; the next, you’re battling horizontal rain. While embracing the elements is part of the fun, your skin might not be as enthusiastic. Wind, rain, and temperature swings can leave it dry, irritated, or chafed. Today, we look at how to keep it protected so you can focus on the miles, not your face.

Hydration Starts Before You Step Outside

Even when it’s wet out, your skin still needs hydration. Cold air and rain can strip away moisture, leaving it tight and dry.

  • Apply a good moisturiser before heading out—one that locks in hydration without feeling greasy.
  • Even if the sun isn’t going to make an appearance, don’t skip SPF. UV rays are still a factor, especially if you’re out for prolonged periods, even when it’s cloudy. Remember hanging around before and after a race, a training session or when having a coffee at your favourite pedal stop!
  • Rain, sweat, and habit (wiping your face with your sleeve) can wear off protection, so reapply when needed.

A Clean Face for a Clear Mind

Okay, having a clean face won’t make you run faster, but it will help prevent irritation. A little pre-run prep goes a long way.

  • Stick to your usual skincare routine—no need to overcomplicate things.
  • If you’re new to skincare, a gentle cleanser is a good start.
  • Skip exfoliants or scrubs right before a run; freshly scrubbed skin + wind + rain = regret!

Protect Against Windburn and Chafing

Windburn and rain-chafed skin can sneak up on you, especially on longer runs. A protective barrier can make all the difference.

  • Anti-chafe balm isn’t just for thighs—apply a small amount to areas prone to irritation, like your face or nose, armpits and nipples.
  • If the wind’s brutal, a thin layer of a protective balm can help create a barrier against the elements. Windburn can hurt as bad as sunburn.

Don’t Forget Your Lips

Your lips take a beating on wet and windy runs, and once they’re cracked, they stay that way for days.

  • Apply a mineral sunscreen before heading out, and with moisture-locking ingredients.
  • Keep a small one in your pocket if you’re out for a long session.
  • Post-run, use a nourishing balm to keep them soft—because no one enjoys that dry, chapped feeling.

Running in the Elements: Tough but Worth It

Running in unpredictable weather makes you feel alive— and we think it increases the sense of achievement after a good session. Until you get home and realise your skin feels like it’s been through a battle. Taking a few minutes to hydrate and protect your skin means you can embrace the elements without paying for it later.

So, whether it’s sunshine, sideways rain, or all four seasons in one run, make sure you’re covered—literally.
