Board of muddling through? Tried paddle boarding?
Why Paddle Boarding Might Be the Balance You Didn’t Know You Needed
A few weeks ago, I headed west with our content guru Gemma and her family to West Kilbride. The sun was out, the kids were buzzing, and the water was calm enough to tempt us onto paddle boards. Views stretched across to Arran and Goat Fell and for a few hours, the world got quiet.
What started as a bit of fun quickly turned into something more, a proper reminder of how movement, nature, and a little bit of challenge can reset (rest?) your head. At Ready Sweat Go, that’s what we’re all about: finding the things that bring energy, calm, and clarity – then helping you build more of them into your day.
Now, you’re (most likely!) not going to be paddle boarding every day, but what’s the deal with paddle boarding, and why should it be on your radar?
1. Core Strength Without the Crunches
Balancing on a board isn’t just for your Instagram. You’re constantly engaging your core to stay upright – and the result is a low-impact, full-body workout that sneaks up on you in the best way.
2. A Breather for Your Brain
Water does something to your head. The rhythmic paddle strokes. The stillness. The sound of nothing but birds, waves and breeze. It’s mindfulness in motion – a reset button but with no device, app or screen in sight!
3. Joint-Friendly Movement
If you’ve been pounding the pavements or lifting heavy, paddle boarding gives your joints a break while still building strength, especially in your shoulders, back and glutes. Think active recovery with a healthy dose of fresh air.
4. Vitamin D, Naturally Delivered
Talking of which. Sunshine. Fresh air. No fluorescent lights in sight. It’s a gentle reminder that your body needs daylight, movement, and time outside – not just spreadsheets, schedules or endless scrolling.
5. Mental Focus & Flow
Like trail running or open-water swimming, paddleboarding puts you into a state of flow. You can’t zone out (or enjoy that swim!) – you’re tuned in. Well, some people may be able to, but I’m certainly not there yet! And when you come back to shore? You’re sharper. Calmer. Reset.
Try and not be relaxed watching Gemma paddle away in the sunshine!
6. It’s Social, Without the Small Talk
Paddle boarding can be solo or shared – and either way, it connects you. To nature. To your breath. And, if you’re with others, to laughter, splashes, and probably the odd unexpected swim.
7. Builds Balance (Literally & Figuratively)
Here at RSG, we often discuss the importance of balance – between training and recovery, ambition and presence, and doing and being. What our wee paddle boarding adventure taught me was that it takes practice. Get used to being a bit wobbly. It's a bit wild. But it’s totally worth it.
